Can You Get IPC Certified With No Experience?
Oct 25, 2026
Yes. Many people earn IPC CIS certification early in their careers. Hands-on experience helps, but good preparation matters more.
Start with CIS
Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) is the certification for people who build and inspect product. It tests whether you understand the standard and can find and apply its requirements. It doesn't require a college degree.
CIT, the trainer level, is a different story. It's meant for people with solid experience who will teach others.
What beginners find hardest
- The vocabulary. Terms like wetting, lead protrusion and heel fillet are new at first.
- Finding things fast. The exam is open book, but you still need to know where to look.
- Class differences. The same condition can be acceptable for Class 1 and a defect for Class 3.
How to prepare without experience
- Watch every lesson in order. Each module builds on the last.
- Keep the standard open while you study, so you learn its layout.
- Do the practice questions until you can explain why each answer is right.
- Ask questions as they come up. Our courses include an AI tutor available around the clock.
- Look at real hardware when you can. Compare what you see to the pictures in the standard.
Why it's worth it
A CIS certificate shows an employer you know the standard they build to. For someone starting out, it can set your application apart and make on-the-job training faster.
Study on your schedule
Our courses are on demand, so you can prepare in the evenings or on your phone during a commute.
Most beginners start with IPC-A-610 for circuit board work or IPC/WHMA-A-620 for cable and harness work.
