What is IPC/WHMA-A-620?
IPC/WHMA-A-620, Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies, is the most widely used workmanship standard for wire and cable harness manufacturing in the world. It defines the acceptance criteria for wire harness fabrication — establishing what is acceptable, what is a process indicator, and what is a defect across crimping, splicing, soldering, routing, shielding, lacing, connector installation, and cable assembly workmanship.
Developed and maintained jointly by IPC and WHMA (Wire Harness Manufacturers Association), the standard is trusted by OEMs, contract manufacturers, aerospace and defense suppliers, automotive harness fabricators, and medical device manufacturers worldwide. For facilities that build or inspect wire and cable harness assemblies, IPC/WHMA-A-620 is not a suggestion — it is the benchmark.
IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification exists at three levels: CIS for floor-level application and inspection, CIT for those who train and certify others, and CSE for technical authorities who interpret the standard. Each credential is recognized globally and is increasingly required, not just preferred, by high-reliability manufacturers in aerospace, defense, automotive, and medical device industries.
Which IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certification Is Right for You?
Three certifications. Three distinct roles. All fully remote through ElectroSpec.
Certified IPC Specialist (CIS)
For: Wire harness technicians, cable assembly inspectors, and harness fabrication professionals
The CIS is the foundational IPC/WHMA-A-620 credential. It certifies that you can correctly apply IPC/WHMA-A-620 acceptance criteria — identifying acceptable conditions, process indicators, and defects across wire harness fabrication, crimping, splicing, soldering, connector installation, and assembly workmanship.
Best for:
- Wire harness technicians and cable assembly inspectors
- Professionals in harness fabrication seeking formal credentials
Exam format: 8 open-book module exams
Certification valid: 2 years
Starting at: $650
Certified IPC Trainer (CIT)
For: Quality managers, training coordinators, and technical leads in wire harness manufacturing
The CIT authorizes you to train and certify others to the IPC/WHMA-A-620 CIS level — giving your organization the internal capability to run its own wire harness certification program without coordinating with outside providers every time.
Best for:
- Quality managers building internal certification programs
- Training coordinators formalizing their instructional authority
- Senior professionals adding a recognized teaching credential in wire harness manufacturing
Exam format: Open-book exam (~75 questions) + closed-book exam (~25 questions)
Certification valid: 2 years
Starting at: $1,100
Certified Standards Expert (CSE)
For: Engineers, quality professionals, and senior technical staff in wire harness manufacturing
The CSE designates you as your facility's technical authority on IPC/WHMA-A-620 — the person who interprets requirements, resolves workmanship disputes, supports audits, and guides your organization's compliance program.
Best for:
- Quality engineers and compliance leads in harness manufacturing
- Professionals supporting customer source inspections and audits
- Technical staff serving as the go-to IPC/WHMA-A-620 resource
Exam format: Open-book exam (~75 questions) + closed-book exam (~25 questions); 2.5-hour exam window
Certification valid: 2 years
Starting at: $800
