The Short Answer
No. IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and IPC-A-600 are copyrighted documents sold by IPC. Full copies posted for free download are unauthorized copies.
Why Free PDFs Are a Bad Idea
- They're often out of date. Many free copies are old revisions. Working to the wrong revision can mean accepting or rejecting product incorrectly.
- They may be incomplete or altered. You have no way to know whether pages or criteria are missing.
- They can create problems at work. Using unauthorized copies in a quality system can be flagged in audits and puts your employer at risk.
- Download sites can carry malware.
Where to Get a Legitimate Copy
Your employer. Most companies that build or inspect to these standards already own copies. Ask your quality department first.

What You Can Find for Free
IPC publishes free tables of contents for many of its standards. They're useful for understanding how a standard is organized before you buy.
Free articles, like this blog, can explain how a standard works, what product classes mean and how acceptance decisions are made. They can't replace the criteria in the standard itself.
Do You Need Your Own Copy for Certification?
For CIS, yes, you need access to one. The CIS exams for IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and IPC-A-600 are open book, and you use the standard during every module. You don't have to buy your own if your employer's copy is the current revision and you can use it during the exam.
For CIT and CSE, the standard is allowed during the open-book part only.
The CID and CID+ PCB design exams are closed book, so you don't need a standard during those exams.
Make Sure It's the Right Revision
The current revisions are IPC-A-610J, IPC/WHMA-A-620F and IPC-A-600M. Check the cover. If your employer's copy is an older revision, let us know before you schedule your exam.
