Does IPC Certification Expire? How Recertification Works
Oct 10, 2026
Yes. IPC certifications do not last forever.
IPC certifications, including CIS, CIT and CSE, are valid for 24 months from the date you certify.
Why Does IPC Certification Expire?
IPC standards are revised every few years. Criteria change, new technologies are added and old guidance is removed.
Recertification makes sure certified people are working to current requirements and have not forgotten what they learned.
Customers and auditors expect certificates to be current. An expired certificate usually means the person is no longer considered certified for contract work.
How Does Recertification Work?
Recertification is a shorter path than your first certification.
You review the standard, focus on what has changed and pass the required exams again.
The most important rule: recertify before your certificate expires. If it lapses, you may have to take the full certification course again.
Tips to Avoid a Lapse
- Note your expiration date the day you certify
- Set a reminder about three months before it expires
- Check whether the standard has a new revision coming
- Companies should track every certified employee's date in one list
What About Trainers (CIT)?
CIT certificates also run on a 24-month cycle.
A CIT whose certificate expires cannot continue training and certifying CIS students until they recertify. For a company that relies on in-house trainers, a lapse can stop the training program.
Plan Recertification Like Production
For a single person, recertification is a calendar item.
For a production floor, it is a planning task. Spreading recertification dates out helps keep enough certified operators and inspectors on every shift.
