How to Get IPC-A-610 Certified: A Step-by-Step Guide
Nov 01, 2026
If your employer, a customer or a job posting asks for IPC-A-610 certification, you probably want to know exactly what to do next.
Here is the whole process, from deciding which level you need to downloading your certificate.
Start your certification
ElectroSpec’s IPC-A-610 CIS certification includes the official exam, a free retake on every module and remote scheduling on your dates.
Step 1: Confirm Which Level You Need
IPC-A-610 has three certification levels:
- CIS (Certified IPC Specialist) for people who build, inspect or rework assemblies. This is what most job postings mean by "IPC-A-610 certified".
- CIT (Certified IPC Trainer) for people who will train and certify CIS candidates.
- CSE (Certified Standards Expert) for people who need deep knowledge of the standard but don't teach.
If you're not sure, start with CIS.
Step 2: Check That IPC-A-610 Is the Right Standard
IPC-A-610 covers the acceptability of printed circuit board assemblies. If you work on cable and wire harness assemblies, you need IPC/WHMA-A-620. If you inspect bare boards before assembly, you need IPC-A-600.
Step 3: Get Access to the Standard
The CIS exam is open book, and you will use the IPC-A-610 standard during every module exam. Ask your quality department whether the company already has a current copy. The current revision is IPC-A-610J.
If you need your own, you can add the English edition at checkout.
Step 4: Choose How You Will Prepare
IPC does not require a training course before the CIS exam. You can choose:
- Exam Only if you already apply IPC-A-610 every day, which suits many people recertifying.
- Exam + Preparation if you want an on-demand course, practice questions and an AI tutor before you test.
- Private Team Training if your company is certifying a group.
Step 5: Study the Way the Exam Works
IPC-A-610 CIS is made up of 7 open-book module exams, each with roughly 15 to 20 questions. You need 70% on each module to pass.
Because it's open book, the skill being tested is knowing where to find the answer quickly and applying the right product class. Practice navigating the standard as much as you practice the content.
Step 6: Schedule Your Module Exams
Exams are taken online through the IPC Remote Proctor System. You need a computer with a webcam, a microphone and an internet connection.
You can schedule each module on its own day, at any time and in any time zone, with as little as one business day's notice.
Step 7: Retake Any Module You Miss
If you don't pass a module, you get one free retake. You can retake it as soon as 24 hours later or up to 90 days later.
Step 8: Download Your Certificate
Once you pass all 7 modules, IPC issues your serialized certificate in the IPC Edge system. Log in to download and print it within 180 days.
Step 9: Put Your Renewal Date in the Calendar
IPC-A-610 CIS is valid for two years. Plan to recertify before it expires so there is no gap in your certification.
How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
With focused study, many students finish the prep course in about a week. You have 180 days of access, so you can take longer if you need to.
