What is on the IPC CID exam: format, topics and preparation for PCB designers

People searching for "CID test" or "IPC CID exam questions" usually want to know one thing: what will I actually face on exam day?

Here is how the IPC Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) exam works and what it covers.

ElectroSpec’s CID tracks include the official exam, a free retake, a study guide, 200+ practice questions and a 24/7 AI tutor.

The CID Exam at a Glance

  • Format: closed book, about 100 multiple-choice questions
  • Passing score: 73% or better
  • Time: an 8-hour testing window, though most candidates finish in about 2 hours
  • Delivery: online through the IPC Remote Proctor System
  • Retake: one free retake with ElectroSpec, from 24 hours up to 90 days after your first attempt

Closed Book Changes How You Study

This is the biggest difference from IPC-A-610 or IPC/WHMA-A-620, which are open book.

On the CID exam you can't look things up. You need to understand design principles well enough to answer from memory: why a rule exists, what drives it, and how design choices affect fabrication and assembly.

What the CID Exam Covers

The CID exam spans 10 core knowledge areas. They include:

  • Design considerations
  • Thermal and reliability factors
  • Physical board principles
  • Component technologies
  • Fabrication requirements
  • Documentation standards
  • Assembly processes

The common thread is that a designer's decisions show up later on the fabrication and assembly floor. The exam checks that you understand those links, not that you can drive one particular CAD tool.

What Kind of Questions to Expect

We don't share live exam questions, and you should be wary of anyone who claims to. What we can say is that the questions test applied understanding. Expect to choose the best design decision for a situation, recognize what affects manufacturability or reliability, and know the purpose of common documentation.

Memorizing isolated numbers is less useful than understanding why requirements exist.

How to Prepare

1. Start with your gaps. Experienced layout designers often know routing well but have less exposure to fabrication, materials or documentation. Find out where you stand first.

2. Use practice questions as a diagnostic. Work through practice questions by knowledge area and study the areas where you score lowest.

3. Learn the why. Because the exam is closed book, understanding the reason behind each requirement is what lets you answer questions you haven't seen before.

4. Schedule when you're consistent, not when you're hopeful. Book the exam once your practice scores are reliably above the passing mark.

How Long Does Preparation Take?

Most students using Core Preparation finish in 2 to 4 weeks. Students using Comprehensive Preparation, which adds the 22+ hour CID Fundamentals Course, typically take 4 to 8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy IPC standards for the CID exam?

No. The exam is closed book. IPC-2221 and IPC-2222 are available at checkout if you want them for reference.

Is CID the same as CID+?

No. CID is the foundation. CID+ is the advanced certification, and you must hold a current CID to take it.
